Hi there and welcome to my Find a Therapist profile. I'm Paloma McMullan, a UKCP-registered Psychotherapist offering brief counselling and longer-term psychotherapy to UK-based individuals aged 18 and over. My 4-year MSc in Integrative Psychotherapy (completed at Sherwood Psychotherapy Training Institute in Nottingham) has equipped me with the expertise to thoughtfully draw upon different psychotherapeutic traditions (such as Psychoanalysis, Object Relations, Gestalt, Transactional Analysis, Person Centred and CBT) to create a customised approach tailored to your unique history, way-of-being, skill set and goals, using a developmental-relational model as the foundation for my practice.
I will work with you to co-create a therapeutic relationship which, while structured and boundaried, is also authentic, nurturing and meaningful. I will listen- with interest, empathy and compassion- to whatever you choose to share with me. I will actively engage in dialogue; asking questions, offering observations and insights, sharing tools and strategies, and signposting you to additional resources. Together, we will reflect on what brings you to therapy and formulate a way forward that feels right to you, enriching your understanding of yourself and your relationships in the process.
The motivations for our thoughts, feelings and actions frequently operate outside of our awareness which can keep us 'stuck', repeating established patterns that may not serve our best interests in the here-and-now. By sensitively bringing unconscious processes to your attention, I will provide you with an opportunity to reflect on- and potentially revise- your longstanding beliefs about yourself, others and the world around you, freeing you up to experiment with thinking, feeling and behaving differently.
I have been in practice since January 2015. My expertise lies in engaging with individuals in all of their richness and complexity rather than focusing exclusively on any challenges that they may be facing. I work with people from all walks of life and backgrounds, seeking support for a broad range of issues. I am passionate about helping my clients to gain a greater understanding of the factors contributing to their present difficulties and supporting their progress towards meaningful growth and change.
MY SPECIAL INTEREST AREAS:
Self-care and building resilience; emotional regulation; trauma and recovery; relationships with self and others; life transitions; and Higher Education and the student experience. Prior to my psychotherapy training, I spent over 2 decades studying, teaching, and providing pastoral support at various universities in the UK and US, which I very much enjoyed; consequently I am well-equipped to support students and others employed within HE settings.
I offer remote appointments (via telephone or Zoom- a secure online platform) between 12pm-8pm on weekdays, with limited availability between 12pm-4pm on Saturdays and face-to-face appointments (currently on Tuesday afternoons/evenings) at Humber Therapy Centre in Beeston, Nottingham.
Research indicates that the quality of the relationship between practitioner and client is crucial in determining a successful therapeutic outcome. With this in mind, I invite you to get in touch to book a free, no-obligation, phone or Zoom introductory session to enable us to discover how we get along and give us a sense of whether you would find my approach useful.
