My Approach

Perhaps you are experiencing a crisis or going through significant life changes. You may want to work out, with counselling support, whether to stay together in your relationship or not, or to establish what needs to change.

Perhaps you have unresolved childhood issues that require linking past events and experiences to see and change patterns in the present through the counselling process.

I also have much experience in the field of bereavement counselling. As a grief counsellor, I will look closely at the impact of your loss with you, this may also include your experience of shock which can be complicated to navigate on your own.
I work with clients with serious health related illnesses such as heart disease, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, and cancer. You may want counselling in preparation for or following surgery.

I also work with young people aged over 18 including students at Brighton University and University of Sussex and various other courses in the area. It has been a particularly challenging time for young people. Please contact me directly on behalf of your young person if they would prefer.
I am a senior accredited psychotherapeutic counsellor with UKCP and UKAHPP. I established Brighton Counselling, my private counselling practice in Brighton in 2002. Brighton counselling is based in central Brighton, two minutes from Brighton station and close to Seven Dials and also in the North Laine. I have been working as a Clinical Supervisor for 10 years both privately and at several charities. Prior to becoming a Counsellor, I worked in inner city London Primary schools as a Primary school teacher and deputy headteacher.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

I have worked with many people with ADHD and autism. Neurodiversity describes the differences in the way that people's brains work. There is no 'right' way for the brain to work, there is a wide range of ways that people perceive and respond to the world, these differences are to be encouraged and embraced. Some clients come to counselling with questions as to their characteristics and traits, questioning and wanting to explore this. They may go on to seek diagnosis with the support of therapy. Counselling can play a huge part in helping people come to terms with their diagnosis and cope with how the condition impacts on their lives and relationships. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition; that is to say, its symptoms, and associated behaviours and traits are the result of a person’s brain developing differently during the key stages of development before they were born or as a very young child.
You may be suffering from anxiety or stress and need a confidential supportive space to explore what has brought you to this point. Perhaps you are experiencing a crisis or going through significant life changes. You may want to work out, with counselling support, whether to stay together in your relationship or not, or to establish what needs to change.
Bereavement counselling can help in coping with the pain and potential loneliness and overwhelm of grief. The death of a loved one can be devastating, one of the hardest challenges we face in life. Everyone experiences grief differently and there is no ‘normal’ or ‘right’ way to grieve. Bereavement counselling offers an opportunity to understand the process of loss, and can give a framework to manage grief. We can explore areas that could potentially prevent you from moving on, helping to resolve areas of conflict in order to be able to move forward. It is so important to have time and permission to grieve. People come to bereavement counselling at different times. This could be a couple of months after their loss or a year or more later. It also could be during a terminal illness of a relative or friend as the bereavement process can start before someone dies.
Eating disorders, addictions and serious health issues (cancer, heart surgery, chronic pain for example).
I am a Gestalt Centre and Brighton University approved supervisor. I offer Clinical Supervision to counsellors in training, on placement and to those in an established practice. I work with Supervisees at my Private Practice, Brighton Counselling, two minutes from Brighton station or at my alternative location at Orange Row in the North Laine. I am a Clinical Supervisor at AYA Centre in Southwick working with supervisees both individually and in groups. I have worked at As You Are for over 8 years. I previously worked at CRI drug and alcohol addiction charity (now Pavilions) in Brighton and Hove as a Clinical Supervisor and I also worked for Cruse Bereavement Care as a Clinical Supervisor.
