I offer a warm and supportive therapy space, in which we can work together to make sense of what is going on for you/your family, and then explore ideas for change. We will agree a way of working together and I will check in with you and invite your feedback about how our work is going. I will listen carefully to you. I will be transparent with you about my ideas and offer suggestions and feedback, when this is helpful.
I use a range of therapy approaches according to the age(s), preferences and hopes for change of the person or family I am working with. I have a special interest in attachment-based family therapy models. For couples, I prefer emotion-focused approaches to reducing unhappiness, and promoting more compassionate communication in partner relationships.
I am experienced in working with clients who present with neurodevelopmental differences such as autism spectrum conditions and ADHD, and will make adjustments to ensure therapy is inclusive.
I have worked for a number of years with clients experiencing oppression, social inequality and the impact of discrimination. I am mindful of the influence of social injustice on mental health, wellbeing and relationships. I feel strongly about the need for therapy to be inclusive of those from marginalised groups, and those less likely to access mental health treatments. I would be happy to talk with you about any experiences of exclusion or discrimination you have faced, and how we might try to ensure therapy is inclusive and empowering for you.
I especially enjoy working with young people and families experiencing the turbulence and renewal of the adolescent years, but am confident working with clients across the life span, including individual adults, couples and co-parents.
I offer a free telephone consultation, so we can discuss your needs and hopes for therapy and you can ask any questions you might have.
I am an experienced systemic psychotherapist. I work with with individuals, couples and whole families, including younger children.
As a systemic therapist, I view problems as embedded within relationships, context and communication patterns, rather than within individuals. This helps to reduce blame and shame, so that people feel supported and empowered to find more helpful and enjoyable ways of relating to each other, and to themselves.
In my NHS role, I work mainly with adolescents who are facing a range of challenges including depression, anxiety, emotional intensity, family conflict and the impact of trauma.
I have experience of working with families receiving support from local authority social care services, with young people who present with offending (criminal) behaviours and with those who find it difficult to access mainstream therapy and mental health providers.
I have a particular interest in the impact of parenting stress, social context and parents’ own personal histories on the quality of family life. I am passionate about supporting parents to be the confident caregivers they want to be for their children.
Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.
