About Me

Hello, and a warm welcome to my profile. I am Marta, a Gestalt psychotherapist working with clients in person, online, and by telephone. I work both privately and with private medical insurence providers (AXA Health, Aviva and Healix).

There are many different reasons why people experience emotional challenges, upsets, or dissatisfaction. We can become overwhelmed by situations that are out of our control, end up being trapped in familiar but unproductive patterns or unsatisfying relationships, or simply reach a point in life when things are not feeling quite alright. Whether you are faced with an emotional storm or a sense of being stuck, therapy can support you in finding a way forward.

My priority as a therapist is to offer a safe and confidential space where you can bring what feels important to you. I am trained to use traditional talk therapy as well as creative media such as drawing or working with objects. Our sessions will help you connect with yourself—your thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations—to gain a deeper understanding of your experience in the world. Through the therapy process, you will get to know yourself better, which will guide you in making meaningful choices long after our work has ended.

As a therapist, I have been supporting people struggling with anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and confidence, separation and divorce, existential crises, relational difficulties, and the impact of traumatic life experiences (including medical or clinician-associated trauma). I am experienced with and enjoy meeting clients from varied ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Having moved internationally myself, I am attuned to the joys and challenges of building a life away from the native country. I also enjoy working with students, who are currently training to become counsellors and/or psychotherapists.

As well as private practice, I have also worked for the NHS and with non-profit counselling organisations. My professional background is in healthcare, where I spent over twenty years before becoming a psychotherapist.

I offer an initial 15-minute telephone or video conversation to understand what brings you to counselling and what you hope to gain. This will set an agenda for how we will work and what to prioritize. Depending on your needs, the course of our work can be either fixed-term or open-ended.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Anger is a normal, healthy emotion that we may experience when we feel attacked, deceived, frustrated, invalidated, or treated unfairly. It is usually our response to a real or perceived threat to ourselves or a loved one, to a property, or to our self-concept (something that makes us feel bad about ourselves). Although it is a protective emotion, it can be unhelpful if it becomes excessive or habitual. It can also be problematic if we struggle to get in touch with or express our anger, for anger can give us a way to express negative feelings, assert boundaries, or motivate us to leave unhealthy situations. Upbringing, cultural background, gender, and personal beliefs often shape our relationship with anger. These factors also influence whether or not we express anger and how we go about it. Some people learned outward-oriented aggressive expressions (e.g., shouting, swearing, slamming doors, breaking objects), others implement inward aggression (e.g., telling yourself that you hate yourself or denying yourself basic needs), and some use non-violent or passive aggression (e.g., ignoring people or refusing to talk to them, being sarcastic while not saying anything explicitly aggressive or angry, refusing to do tasks, or deliberately doing things poorly). Working with anger in therapy does not mean getting rid of the feeling (this would be neither possible nor healthy). Instead, we would work together on learning your triggers, understanding your thought patterns, and developing your communication style.
Bereavement is one of the most challenging life events we can encounter as human beings, and most of us will face loss at some point in our lives. Emotionally, people often experience shock, confusion, emptiness, numbness, sadness, anger, despair, depression, anxiety, and/or guilt. Grief and loss also affect the brain and body in many different ways. They can cause changes in memory, behaviour, sleep, and body function, affecting the immune system as well as the heart. Loss can be an isolating experience, and I believe that having someone to talk to can make a significant difference. I have undergone specialised training with Dr. John Wilson on how to gently and mindfully support people through what is recognised to be one of the most stressful life experiences.
