My Approach

My approach is analytic. I listen for the unconscious which is hidden in the way we talk. It is an inquiry into our minds in order to find out who we really are.

About Me

My name is Mariana. I have been practicing as a counsellor for about 15 years before relatively recent training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy at the Guild of Psychotherapists.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

I worked as a counsellor in CACS (Croydon Alcohol Counselling Service) for about 4 years. The service offered 1 year of therapy, which was a very valuable contribution to the community dealing with the consequences of addictions.
Many people are affected by anxiety, which is the only feeling that is constant. Others come and go. Anxiety can be paralysing for some of us and it gets in the way of work and love.
When people say that they are depressed, we ask a question: What is being depressed? Repressed?
We are formed and developed in relationships with primary carers, whoever that may be: parents, larger family members, institutions and society at large. When we grow up, we often find that we repeat the patterns we learnt a long time ago. People come to therapy when they realise these patterns are not helpful to them any more.
Even though there are some objective parameters that may help qualify something as trauma, in the work it is the subjective that is most important: how the subject relates to the events that occured in his/her life. Some things, for example, could not be objectively characterised as traumatic, but the lived experience of the patient suggests that this was so.
