My Approach

I am a Gestalt Psychotherapist who believes change is possible and we can learn what we need to support ourselves. I work with adults who would like to feel more satisfied with aspects of their lives and resolve issues. This may be working on aspects of ourselves or in our relationships with others or healing from past events. Through understanding more about ourselves, our patterns and the impact of our experiences, we can make choices about how we manage our lives. Understanding and valuing ourselves, developing our self confidence and being open to change are key processes in building our resilience to the ups and downs of life and achieving our potential.

You may have already tried a number of ways to resolve problems with some success but would like more satisfaction. Psychotherapy is a collaborative process as we work at the pace you need so you can explore the possibilities. I believe learning is a lifelong process and change can sometimes be difficult but potentially very rewarding.
I offer On-Line, telephone or face to face sessions. Or a mix by arrangement.
Together we work out what you need to feel the satisfaction or resolution you would like.

About Me

I am a Gestalt Psychotherapist. We believe that everyone has the potential to be who they would like to be but life experiences may get in the way of this and affect how we think. Working towards being more authentically who would we like to be is core to our work. As a psychotherapist I have worked with a wide range of issues.
In addition I am informed by my 30 years previous career as a social worker. I worked in a variety of settings and met people in various situations. In particular I gained experience working with mental health, learning difficulties, ageing, abuse issues and many other issues. I also worked as a supervisor supporting others to develop themselves in their profession.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Experiencing abuse, whether as an adult or child, often creates issues that are ongoing and elements of trauma may linger. Throughout both my careers I have worked with survivors of abuse. A lot of my work as with other issues- focusing on support, building up resilience, developing a personal toolkit of strategies. It is important to support this work at a pace people can manage.
I worked with people trying to manage addictions throughout my social work career and also spent some time counselling in an agency specialising in supporting people with alcohol issues. This also involved supporting people in relationship with someone who tries to manage alcohol issues. Looking at the underlying causes is important in supporting people to consider alternative ways of managing emotions as addictions can often be a way of managing difficult feelings.
I have supported people with managing anxieties throughout my career as a social worker and psychotherapist. Anxiety is a useful emotion but sometimes we need to get it into proportion and manage the intensity. I use a concept of developing our own personal 'toolkit' of self-care strategies to support us short term whilst we work on what lies underneath and find alternative ways of dealing with issues.
In Gestalt we often refer to 'unfinished business'- that is issues that continue to affect us and need resolving. Trauma , whether from one incident or cumulative, is often something people feel overwhelming when triggered. In Therapy I focus on support and building up resilience so that people can deal with issues at a pace they can manage. Working with trauma requires pacing and step by step approach so that it does not become overwhelming and can instead be managed.
