Systemic psychotherapy can be helpful for individuals, couples and families who want to focus on their relationships and interactions. The approach is collaborative in deciding together with you what the difficulties are and how we will know when they are resolved. There is an emphasis on different points of view as a route towards the change that you want. Emotional difficulties are seen as arising in the context of the events and circumstances in your life rather than something being "wrong" with you.
I offer systemic psychotherapy in order to address individual problems by considering the relevance of family relationships and the wider social and economic context. I undertake therapeutic work with families, couples , or individuals. I aim to work collaboratively with clients and together we can decide whether individual, couple or family therapy would be most appropriate, how often the sessions should be, and whether to aim for short term focused work or longer term more exploratory work. I can offer an initial consultation to clarify the issues, to plan a constructive way forward and to see if my approach is the most appropriate. I think it is important for therapy to respect different values, beliefs and ideas and to recognise that families vary widely in terms of family structure, ethnicity and culture. Family members are a powerful resource for change and including them in sessions can often lead to recognition of options not previously considered and to the use of untapped strengths and resources. Family sessions provide an opportunity to talk together when there is little time to do this at home and may allow difficult thoughts, feelings and interactions to be more comfortably and fruitfully explored with an intermediary, leading to better understanding, changing unhelpful patterns into helpful ones and ultimately better ways of getting along together. I have had wide ranging experience since 1981 in the NHS, Social Services and the independent sector with children, adolescents and adults seeking help with a range of emotional, relationship, psychological and psychiatric difficulties.
