This way of working is more exploratory and less structured than short term, skills-based or solution-focused approaches. It does not focus on advice or set techniques but instead on understanding patterns in thoughts, feelings and relationships and how these have developed over time.
It may suit people who feel stuck in longstanding or repeated difficulties, as well as those dealing with sudden or recent events that feel hard to make sense of or adjust to.
Sessions are held at the same time each week. Weekly sessions are the minimum frequency offered, with more than once-weekly sessions available where appropriate. The work is open-ended, meaning there is no set number of sessions, allowing it to develop at its own pace. Alongside longer-term work, I also offer short-term focused therapy if suited to a specific issue or goal and where appropriate.
If you would like to explore whether this way of working might be right for you or would like to know more, please you are welcome to get in touch by email ruxtonla@gmail.com. Please include a brief note about what brings you to therapy and your name and contact details.
Availability June 2026 - sessions are available on Mondays and Thursdays in person or online. I have some evening availability for online sessions.
Life is inevitably difficult at times and I offer a warm, non-judgemental place, working at a pace that suits you, where we can gently explore what's happening on and under the surface . Therapy can help you understand yourself, make sense of your experiences and patterns and make choices that may work better for you. The aim is help you move toward a more balanced, meaningful and satisfying life.
If you're interested, please email me at ruxtonla@gmail.com with a brief outline of what you would like help with, your contact details, preference for face to face or online sessions and and your session day/time preferences. I'm happy to answer any questions and we would usually arrange an initial meeting to get a sense of whether working together feels right.
I provide psychoanalytic psychotherapy, an in-depth form of talking therapy that focuses on understanding emotional difficulties and the patterns in how we relate to ourselves, our situations and others.
I am an experienced therapist with 16 years in private practice and more than 20 years clinical experience in the NHS, where I continue to work part-time. I work with people experiencing a wide range of emotional, relational and health related difficulties, including stress and anxiety, depression, life transitions, loss, the psychological impact of physical health conditions, and concerns related to sexual health and well-being .
Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.
