My Approach

It is very important that you feel comfortable your therapist and this understandably takes time. I offer a free 20 minute consultation which can be either video or audio call. My aim is to provide a safe and relaxed enviroment and to work at your pace to explore the issues that you want to address in therapy. Initially I suggest we meet for 2 sessions so I can fully understand your life experiences, what has brought you the therapy at this point and what your hopes or goals are for the future. It also gives you an opportunity to see if my approach works for you. If I feel my skills and experience is insufficient to provide you with the help that is needed I will suggest other avenues of support or other therapists that may be more appropriate/suitable for your needs. If we agree further sessions these wil be shaped by your needs at the time. I will work in collaboration with you on the specific goals we discussed. During our time together we will review progress towards an ending based on an agreed number of sessions or, if the therapy is open ended, regular reviews of progress will be part of the process.
If I think it will be of benefit to you, I may use creative methods, from time to time as I have found these to be beneficial in the process of self-discovery. I see my role is to help you through this process of exploring your problems or difficulties without judgement or telling you what to do. If I think it would be helpful, I may provide information or offer suggestions.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Working together on your relationship problems can be challenging it is therefore vitality important that a safe space is created for both of you. It is frequently the case that one partner in the couple feels reluctant to engage in couples work for many different reasons. My role is to work with you on your relationship difficulties in some depth, without judgment or telling you what to do, so that you can work things out for yourselves.
The mind can often heal itself naturally, in the same way as the body does. Much of this natural healing process occurs when we're sleeping, particularly during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. In 1987 Francis Shapiro developed Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) to treat Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Since then, EMDR has been used even up effectively to treat a wide range of mental health problems limbic system's traumatic memories can be continually triggered when you experience events similar to the difficult experiences you've been through. Often the memory itself is long forgotten, but the painful feelings such as anxiety, panic, anger, or despair are continually triggered in the present. Your ability to live in the present and learn from new experiences can therefore become inhibited. EMDR helps create the connections between your brain's memory networks, enabling your brain to process the traumatic memory in a very natural way. In addition to PTSD, EMDR has found to be an effective in treatment for other mental health issues: Anxiety and panic attacks Depression Stress Phobia's Sleep problems Complicated Grief Addictions Pain relief, phantom limb pain. Self-esteem and performance anxiety
PTSD is a condition that some people develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Mostly people naturally recover from the initial distress from the upsetting experience. However, sometimes our natural coping mechanisms become overloaded and result in disturbing experiences remaining frozen in our brain. In PTSD traumatic memories can be continually triggered when you experience events similar to the difficult experiences you've been through. For example, an overwhelming single incident like a car accident or, by repeatably being subjected to distress in situations like childhood neglect, bullying, domestic abuse, etc). Often the memory itself is long forgotten, but the painful feelings such as anxiety, panic, anger, or despair are continually triggered in the present. Your ability to live in the present and learn from new experiences can therefore become inhibited Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an effective treatment Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) as an effective treatment for PTSD. It is not however appropriate for everyone. The process is rapid, and any disturbing experiences, if they occur at all, last for a comparatively short period of time. Nevertheless, you need to be aware, and willing to experience, the strong feelings and disturbing thoughts, which sometimes occur during sessions.
Our relationships with ourselves and others can be greatly improved by learning to be more curious. Becoming curious about ourselves and those close to us can help us to reflect on the assumptions we make that might not be helpful. Developing our sense of self and what's important to us can help to become more open about your thoughts, feeling and needs and conversely those of others.
