My Approach

My approach is informed by several models of psychotherapy including existential and phenomenological, Gestalt, transactional analysis, systemic, attachment theory and Eastern philosophy, all underpinned by a person-centered attitude. I may also use elements of CBT, psychodynamic theory, somatic experiencing and Focusing techniques. In the room this may feel like a holistic and compassionate curiosity and an invitation for welcoming whatever it is that arises for you and between us in the sessions. Together we may be able to make richer meaning out of your experiences, and create an easing of any suffering, or perhaps discover greater clarity in how to adapt to life's challenges. I work with clients for both short-term goal-orientated outcomes and longer-term for a deeper exploration, and even restructuring, of how you might relate to yourself, the world and others. We will regularly review to see how we are getting on.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Anger is a powerful emotion that is misunderstood and often mis-directed. Healthy anger is a necessary expression of personal power. It is how we know when our boundaries have been crossed; how we know, "that isn't alright!". However, aggressive behaviour is overstepping somebody else's boundaries and can be intimidating and scary for others. Anger can also easily transmute into passive/aggressive (switching between) behaviour or passive-aggressive (indirect) communications. All of these can interfere with maintaining positive and supportive relationships in our lives. It may be that you are angry with people or things from your past (unfinished business) which have not been brought into full awareness or processed yet. It may be that you are angry because you are overwhelmed and some change is needed. Anger is a go-to emotion for many people which blankets over other, harder to access emotions, such as fear or sadness perhaps. These are the things we can look at together and at your pace through psychotherapy. “Anybody can become angry; that is easy. But to be angry with the right person and to the right degree and at the right time and for the right purpose, and in the right way—that is not within everybody’s power and is not easy.” (Aristotle)
Anxiety is a natural healthy human response to perceived threat as well as a background reality for the problem of being human! From eco-anxiety to health anxiety to social anxiety, death anxiety and general anxiety, it can be extremely helpful to explore in a safe environment and within a holding relationship what fears or unwelcome anticipations are getting in the way of living your most rich and peaceful life. I have studied anxiety extensively throughout my training and ongoing professional development as well as working with my own personal experiences of anxiety and I believe, whilst we cannot eradicate anxiety from the human condition, we can learn to calm and ease the body-mind so that anxiety can become the manageable and helpful friend evolution intended it to be. Getting beneath the symptoms of anxiety to the root cause(s) and finding our way to rest and 'be' with what is there can, paradoxically, often enable us to move on through.
Every family is different, with its own rich tapestry of background. Each family has challenges, both special and distinctive and commonplace. These challenges change as the family grows through each systemic developmental stage, with blended (step) families having additional stages to navigate. Parenting is not easy and there is no roadmap. Therapy can provide a judgement free space to work out how you might best support yourself to best support your child(ren). Whether your child is an entirely dependent infant or an independent adult child, and every stage between, parenting well often requires clarity, support, compassion and insight that we sometimes need help in finding.
Authentic supportive relationships are one of the biggest factors of well-being, happiness, health and longevity. They are also very difficult at times! Whilst I don't work with couples, I have trained in couples therapy and I understand your relationship issues will be as unique as you both are. Working out what we bring to our relationships and being curious and brave enough to venture into our 'blind spots' through therapy can shine an enlightening spotlight onto problems we may be experiencing. How our behaviour, and indeed the relationship, is serving us (or not) and what may be playing out, unconsciously, from the past can help us work out how best to move forward in our relating with significant others in our lives.
Stress is a useful and broad term to indicate that something is not right in your life. It could be understood as your body communicating something to you. It may be that change is required or simply a re-framing of priorities, values, thought patterns and beliefs may reduce your stress. It may be that your boundaries need re-considering and asserting or that you are not getting enough of your needs met. Perhaps you feel angry and this needs exploring and better understanding. Stress implies that something in your life is out of balance and perhaps examining what actually matters to you now, and pursuing a path of greater authenticity is what is being called for.
