My Approach

My approach to client work is collaborative and holistic. This means the client is respected as a whole person within their own context – in terms of personal relationships, family, friends, social life, work situation, home and finances, cultural background, and so on. My work is grounded in the person-centred core conditions – congruence or genuineness of the therapist, unconditional positive regard for the client, and empathic understanding. I’m also strongly influenced by psychodynamics and Jungian psychology, but work cognitively or with the unconscious as appropriate.
A major advantage of working online is the flexibility it offers to clients who travel for work or personal reasons. It’s also brilliant for those who would find travel difficult or who would struggle to keep to a regular weekly schedule of therapy sessions. I offer therapy via video link, telephone, live chat and email.

About Me

I specialise in working with clients who have experienced psychological trauma. Having originally worked from consulting rooms in London, post-pandemic my practice is now fully online via Zoom and a specialist EMDR video platform called Bilateral Base. I continue to offer private counselling, psychotherapy and EMDR therapy to London-based clients, and also to those in the rest of the UK and internationally. I work with people who have symptoms of PTSD, complex PTSD, depression, anxiety, medically unexplained symptoms, relationship issues, stress and personal crisis. In particular I have wide experience of working with survivors of complex trauma resulting from child abuse and neglect.
Having trained in integrative and transpersonal counselling and psychotherapy at The Centre For Counselling and Psychotherapy Education in London, I did an MA in Jungian and Post-Jungian Studies at the University of Essex and an MSc in Psychological Trauma at the University of Chester. I’m currently studying for an MSc in Psychology at the University of Derby.
I have wide experience in both short and long-term work with adult clients. As well as traditional weekly therapy sessions, I also offer brief therapy and single session consultations for those who don’t need or want to enter into regular therapy. Equally, it is possible to have more than one session a week when clinically indicated, either temporarily or as a regular arrangement. EMDR can be included in weekly therapy when appropriate or it can be done in a bespoke intensive format of longer and more closely spaced sessions. For clients who are already in an established therapy and would like to include some EMDR in what they are doing, adjunctive EMDR is a possible solution. This involves doing EMDR with a trained EMDR practitioner while continuing to see your regular therapist, or perhaps during a short break from your established therapy.
Please see my website at www.karenjwilliams.co.uk where you can find more information on all these topics.
You are warmly invited to contact me, in confidence, for more information or to discuss how we may be able to work together to address your concerns.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

EMDR has many applications in addition to helping to alleviate the symptoms of PTSD. It can be used to help with anxiety, depression, pre-verbal trauma, nightmares, OCD, panic attacks, medical trauma, and many other things.
I'm a specialist trauma therapist. Most of my work is with complex PTSD but I also see people with PTSD and stress, depression, anxiety and related issues.
