My Approach

Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy

About Me

We don’t seem to question cleaning and dressing a wound or resting a broken limb to give it the best conditions to heal quickly. With emotional pain a very similar approach is true: when certain conditions are met healing can begin.

In psychotherapy we can explore the existing conditions of a person’s way of living and see how that is resulting in suffering.

Our emotional wounds and traumas created by our past experiences can disconnect us from ourselves. By sharing our story in a safe environment we can gradually start to have more compassion and understanding for all parts of ourselves, which brings about a natural healing process.

I work with a person-centred approach where the relationship between therapist and client is seen as significant in creating conditions for growth. My training is in Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy with the Bath Centre for Psychotherapy and Counselling (BCPC), and I have worked with clients since 2015.

I have six years of work experience in the NHS community mental health team where I have gained valuable insight into the secondary mental health service and the psychiatric approach. Even though my psychotherapy training did not use the framework of mental health diagnostics I have found it helpful to have a working knowledge of diagnoses.

I have worked with a range of clients with addiction, social anxiety, health anxiety, bereavement, relationship difficulties, gender identity and sexuality, depression and self-harm. I am interested in a holistic approach - I believe our mental and physical wellbeing are closely connected.

My work is likely to be influenced by my varied interests, such as the mind-body connection, yoga and meditation, men's and women's circles as powerful arenas for accelerated personal growth; symbols, metaphors, journaling.

  • Private healthcare referrals

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

In paraphrasing an eminent North American researcher and psychotherapist Dr George Atwood, I believe that people will feel depressed when depressing things happen to them. This area is close to my heart and I explored depression in my phenomenological research as part of my MA dissertation.
I am deeply interested in areas such as fertility, motherhood, menstruality, and women's issues; as well as more broadly in hidden biases and related phenomena, especially regarding race, ethnicity, gender.
I have a special interest in life transitions, including midlife crisis and transitions into parenthood or old age.
I have a special interest in relationships of all kinds - with significant others as well as the one we have with ourselves and the planet.
Trauma in one form or another - in the broader sense - is present in every client story I have come across. I am interested in how the continuity of our being gets disrupted when we experience emotional trauma, and, crucially, don't have adequate support to help us manage the impact.
