My Approach

Core Process Psychotherapy is an awareness-based, contemplative approach to psychotherapy which harnesses both ancient eastern, and contemporary western thought on the mind and body. As the world moves beyond traditional medical approaches to working with mental and emotional distress, Core Process Psychotherapy offers a different way of working with the difficult experiences and feelings that we encounter throughout life.

During a therapy session we work slowly and safely with where the body leads us in the present moment. As a somatic (body-based) approach, Core Process Psychotherapy holds the potential to bring about deep and lasting personal transformation. Working with the body helps us to move beyond our personal stories (the things our conscious minds are already aware of) and into the deeper wisdom residing in our unconscious, which is held in the body.

Core Process Psychotherapy is not a psychotherapeutic approach connected to any one religious tradition, although its teachings are greatly informed by Buddhism. I draw on a broad cross section of wisdom spanning many spiritual traditions to help people to reconnect with, and to feel held by, something bigger than just themselves.

A psycho-spiritual perspective to therapy (that’s spiritual with a little ‘s’) means that I help to reorientate my clients back to that which is already whole within them. There are many different ways of languaging this inherent health which lies at the core of our Being, and during the therapeutic process, each individual comes to feel and understand it in their own unique way.

About Me

Like many people, psychotherapy is a second career for me, which I came to having gone through my own difficult period working as a Senior Television Producer in a busy newsroom for many years. My own journey through mental and emotional distress led me to complete a Master of Mindfulness-based Core Process Psychotherapy at the internationally renown Karuna Institute.

I believe that we all go through mental and emotional distress at some point in our lives, but with the right support, that the process can be a transformative, and ultimately even a rewarding experience. Whether it be working with anxiety, depression, trauma, abuse, bereavement or difficulties stemming from something more complex, ultimately symptoms of distress are rooted in the things we go through in our lives.

It’s not a question of what’s wrong, but rather a question of what’s happened.

By working to understand how these experiences have shaped and affected us, we can begin to process and move beyond our emotional pain. I provide a compassionate, non-judgmental and inclusive therapeutic space where my clients can delve deeper into what’s really going on below the surface.

I grew up in Melbourne in Australia and have a strong connection to nature and to the ocean. I moved to London more than a decade ago and currently live in Chiswick with my partner and our Hungarian Vizsla, Lola.

I am an advocate for more compassionate mental health support in the UK and am one of the co-founders of the www.SafelyHeldSpaces.org mental health initiative. I am also a writer passionate about new ways of supporting people with their mental health.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

I specialise in helping people who have experienced physical, psychological and sexual abuse.
I have a unique approach to working with anxiety and the way in which it is often misunderstood in western society. My approach is anchored in eastern teachings on the mind and body. Often we fail to understand that anxiety is not a pathology, but rather a signpost designed to direct our attention to deeper issues in our subconscious that require our attention. When we learn to move towards the anxiety, instead of resisting it, we can learn to understand and act on what it is trying to communicate to us.
Depression is often described as anger that has been ignored or pushed down deep inside us. When we are able to reconnect with the root of our depression: something that wasn't right for us, a time when our 'no' wasn't heard; often we begin to understand that our depression is actually a very important teacher trying to help us to process past trauma or adverse experiences. We begin to realise that what lies on the other side of our experiences of depression is often important emotional growth and profound personal transformation.
I specialise in post traumatic stress and currently work with serving military and veterans. I also co-facilitate national and international workshops on post traumatic stress and trauma-affected sleep with the internationally renowned sleep & lucid dreaming teacher and author, Charlie Morley.
Core Process Psychotherapy is a trauma-informed approach that aims to release traumatic memory trapped in the body. Trauma is not just about what happened to you, it's also about how your body responded to the experience at the time. Trauma is like a moment in time that has become stuck and remains frozen in the body. As a body-based (somatic) approach, Core Process Psychotherapy provides a way of gently reconnecting with the traumatic memory in the body, processing it, and ultimately releasing it and healing past wounds.
