I work with relationships in the lives of my clients, relationships both inside and outside families. My work is characterised by curiosity, patience and care. My systemic approach provides a frame for considering all lives to be deeply implicated in relationships. My work involves explorations of relationships including but not always limited to those which are experienced as troubling. I am flexible both about the number, frequency and length of therapy sessions. I tend to agree such details on a case by case basis.
I am a systemic psychotherapist and a social anthropologist. I have worked in the NHS as a consultant systemic psychotherapist and in private practice since 1991. I offer therapeutic work with families and couples as well as consultations and supervision. I have trained and supervised masters and doctoral level systemic family therapists and well as psychologists for many years. In the past I have held the post of Training & Development Consultant for Race & Equity and until recently I was the Lead of the Systemic Psychotherapy Doctoral course in the Tavistock & Portman NHS Foundation Trust. Reducing my teaching on this course is allowing me to make more time available for private practice now. I combine social anthropology with psychotherapy in order to develop a cross-cultural and ethical approach to difference and discrimination both inside and outside families and I am committed to social justice in the setting of the therapy room as well as in society generally. My cross-cultural experience includes several anthropological research projects as well as the setting up of specialist cross-cultural services in the NHS. I have published widely on my work. I work from my own residence outside Bedford as well as from a consulting room in Highgate.
Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.
