I am a psychotherapeutic counsellor with a background in a humanistic integrative approach. I have a broad backdrop of influences and understanding that informs my work but you are always placed at the centre of an approach that holds the blueprints of our psychology as rooted in the early years of our lives. I work in a trauma informed way and put your safety and well being first.
I believe you are your own best resource in terms of integration, growth or change and that by facilitating the right environment for you, I can help you understand and reflect on what is going on for you; how you operate in the world and get in touch with what it is that you need from your life and relationships within the context of your own narrative.
I am very interested in the emerging field of Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB) and the things it tells us about being in relationship with the world and its people and how therapy can help unpack that and rewire our minds for the better. I am also fundamentally in agreement with Carl Rogers and his belief in the power of the therapeutic relationship. I tend to integrate into this relationship some CBT strategies, some somatic work, some Gestalt (in the here and now) as well as the more creative therapies such as art, drama and play assisted therapy. I often share information on the psychology of the mind and have found that clients find this very helpful - sometimes knowing what is going on can help you get enough of a distance from it that it no longer feels overwhelming and you can approach a difficulty from "round the side".
I will make sure that you are enabled to get in touch with the deeper parts of yourself in a safe and contained way that enables you to figure out what is going on in and on the edges of your awareness; in your relationships and in your sense of who you are.
I see our therapeutic relationship as key to the success or failure of your therapy and as such I want to get to know you from the get go - I promise you won't feel like a subject on a couch, and I promise not to make it weird.
Sometimes its enough just to be truly heard and understood without judgement or a rush to "fix" and I believe in this power of being truly seen and known with compassionate curiosity because I have been on the receiving end of it as a young adult with my own compromised mental health . The counsellor I saw then helped me see things anew; in my therapeutic relationship with her I discovered a new way of being and it was incredibly freeing. Since then I have been on a journey that took me into teaching (Secondary), Kenya, horses, family and, ultimately, five years ago I trained to become a psychotherapeutic counsellor. I am thrilled to offer others what I received. As a therapist I draw on my natural rapport with people and this means my clients tend to feel very at ease from the start. I try to avoid jargon and am pretty down to earth.
I love being outside as much as possible, finding adventure and seeking joy.
I am a fully qualified and accredited therapist operating within the UKCP and BACP ethical frameworks.
I have worked as a therapist since October 2020 and am always developing in my professional capacity; regularly engaging in CPD and further training.
I am in regular supervision with fully qualified supervisors who also work within the UKCP and BACP ethical frameworks.
Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.
