About Me

About Me

I am a registered Psychotherapist with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy, an EMDR UK & Europe Accredited Practitioner, a Clinical Supervisor (Individuals, groups and organisations), a member of the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy, a Fellow of the Institute of Training and Occupational Learning (FITOL) and an Accredited Coach with the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM). I hold a Master's Degree (MSc) in Integrative Psychotherapy and a BSc (Hons) degree in Integrative Counselling. I am trained to offer both short and long term counselling and psychotherapy, EMDR therapy and Clinical Supervision.

I work in private practice as a Psychotherapist and Supervisor. I have also practiced within the counselling and psychotherapy services teams at:

Mind, the mental health charity &
Her Majesty’s Prison Service
Sexual Abuse Referral Centre (SARC)
Peterborough Rape Crisis

I have extensive experience of consulting within organisations and businesses. My early career was based within different areas of the Criminal Justice System and I have worked within community development in the Peterborough area and nationally.

I am based in a private and comfortable building and offer a confidential service in a safe, therapeutic, non-judgmental environment.

How I work
Compassion and common sense are at the heart of my practice. I work in a very 'human' way and fundamental to my practice is the development of a strong treatment relationship - as without a sense of connection and psychological contact between us there can be no therapy.  No issue is trivial, and no issue is too great or too small.

Finding the right-fit between client and therapist, as well as between client and treatment approach is very important. Our first session will give us the opportunity to explore what you hope to get from counselling and assess our suitability to work together.

I approach all of my clients with immediate concern for relieving the distress and symptoms that have prompted them to seek counselling or psychotherapy at this time. I am an active and engaged participant in the therapy. If it is appropriate to our work I will offer expressive and creative means of working with the unconscious to resolve distress and gain understanding.

I belong to a relational-developmental school of psychotherapy, and rather than focusing heavily on past events, I help clients integrate their past with their present.

Resolving trauma
I have a special interest in working with clients who have experienced overwhelming events, sexual abuse and trauma and offer EMDR therapy.

I am an EMDR UK and Europe Accredited Practitioner. This accreditation provides people looking for help with confidence knowing that a high level of experience and expertise has been reached and is a mark of competence and trustworthiness of an EMDR therapist.

Talking therapies can be rewarding for both clients and therapists, however, a focussed approach such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing) is often experienced as more effective and satisfying to both clients and therapists.

Trauma is often misunderstood, ignored and denied; in the aftermath of the most painful assaults to our humanity individuals are left isolated, untreated and suffering.

Many events can be traumatising and may cause traumatic reactions (sometimes many years after the event), examples of these include sexual, physical and emotional abuse, combat, witnessing violence, bullying, medical procedures, falls, accidents, bereavement, natural disasters, and neglectful relationships.

I continue to undertake advanced training in trauma therapy and apply the latest advances of neuroscience and clinical research to my practice in order to relieve the distress and suffering my clients are experiencing. I work with many individuals who have experienced trauma and its ongoing legacy and have deep respect for their painful struggles as well as their strength, resilience and capacity for growth.

I always work in the strictest confidence, in accordance with the BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice and the UKCP Code of Ethics and do so with respect, compassion and empathy.

For further more detailed information on how psychotherapy can help recovery following trauma, sexual abuse and during depression please see the more detailed articles I have written on my website www.colettewelbypsychotherapy.co.uk
