My Approach

During our initial meeting you can decide whether you want short or long term therapy. If you don't know we will decide on a length of time to review how you are doing and whether you feel you are benefitting from sessions.
I work with the issues that you bring making our work client-focused, however there will be times when I guide you towards topics I feel it would be helpful for you to explore.
Sessions can be very varied or may feel very similar. You may feel stuck with where you are and this might need looking at in different ways.
Therapy is not just about talking, it can involve processing difficult thoughts and feelings. For this reason we need to go at your pace.
I aim to be sensitive to and respectful of your situation. There may be times when I challenge what you say to help you confirm your beliefs or see something from a different angle.
My training as a transpersonal psychotherapist may lead us to work with creative imagination, dreams and the unconscious processes which help us heal. I work on a soul level when 'wounds' are very deep, giving you a safe and supportive environment to express the hidden depths of the psyche.
Therapy is all about your growth as an individual to understand and look after yourself so that you can function well in the world and interact with others better.

About Me

Working with me involves forming a safe environment for you to express your problems and work towards you finding solutions.
I see people from all walks of life with many different issues. Most come because they are feeling anxious or depressed, or just do not know how to solve a situation.
Many clients want to discover why they or others behave the way they do in certain situations, or wish to explore problematic relationships. This may include facing difficult thoughts and feelings, helping you to work through them and find a way of moving forward in life.
I have a special interest in how the sounds we hear in our life and the sounds of the past have affected us. This can be anything from the sound of a person shouting at us, to the screech of a car braking, as well as the soothing sounds which help bring calm and give a sense of security.

I also have an interest in clients with Medically Unexplained Symptoms (MUS). There are often psychological traumas which contribute to physical illness. I work creatively to help clients find ways of relieving physical and emotional pain. This may involve talking about the past, chair work, using breathing techniques with toning (voice), guided meditation or imagery, to name but a few.
We can use breath and sound work to connect with the inner (sometimes unconscious) feelings we find difficult to express. This is an effective way to release emotions in a controlled setting, especially useful for those with anger issues and suffering from trauma.

It has been proven that physical, rhythmic movement and breath can help in learning to tolerate distress and help you regain control during episodes of high stress.
With information on how the body responds to threat (real or imagined) we can work towards achieving harmony of mind, body and soul.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Many of my clients come because they have both emotional and physical issues which they think may have a connection i.e. anxiety can cause neck pain or stomach cramps. There is evidence to suggest that the body remembers traumas (small and large). As we hold this in our body our physiology and anatomy changes and we start to feel different about ourselves and the world. Somatised emotions can be seen in our posture and how we breathe. Awareness of this can help us improve our physical and mental health, bringing us into a place of balance and control, changing how we think about ourselves and the world.
