My Approach

The aim of my work is to help people to lead happier and more fulfilling lives through improved relationships. To do this I try to open up communication channels - not only words, but emotions too. I often find that change begins to happen when people are moved. It's a matter of the heart probably more than the intellect.

About Me

I am a qualified Systemic Family Therapist and use a flexible approach to working with individuals, couples, families and teams or organizations. By "flexible" I mean I use a range of tools - anything that I think will help my clients. I also share relevant information with clients and encourage them to learn more and to try new approaches to old problems. I work on a private basis from therapy centres in South Woodford (London E18) and Buckhurst Hill (IG9)

I have long experience first as a field social worker mostly dealing with children, adolescents and families, and adult mental health. Subsequently I worked as a specialist Psychiatric Social Worker and Team Manager in Tier 3 CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services). This involved working as part of a multi-disciplinary team with more complex cases.

Additionally I have experience of setting up and running training in Peer Support in a number of schools, ranging from Primary through to 6th Form and Colleges. This has involved consulting with senior management teams on policy matters including Safegaurding and Anti-Bullying.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

My work around addiction examines both the management of impulse and reconnecting with the felt need for the particular stimulus, i.e. what is the gap that is being filled by intoxication (drugs, alcohol, gambling, sex, etc)? Usually that gap is being filled in a very unsatisfactory and often dangerous way. Other professionals often need to be involved as part of a safe and comprehensive approach.
In work with OCD I use a systemic model emphasising relationships together with a Cognitive model as described by Wilhelm and Steketee. This involves a good deal of teaching about how OCD works, together with graded homework tasks to improve the range of free (obsession and compulsion free) behaviour.
Appropriate "good-enough" parenting is vital for children growing up. Sometimes parents can feel overwhelmed and need some expertise and support to get though a difficult phase. During this work I look for the resources in the parent/s as well as external supports that can be called upon - in the extended family or in helping services. I encourage discussion and partnership between parents and carers and work towards an environment for children that is consistent and encouraging.
My work with those who have suffered trauma is to help them to recover their resilience. Depending on the individual circumstances there may be present concerns that interfere with dealing with past events, such as a quest for legal justice.
This is the core of my work. Often the work involves looking at the impact of relationships past and relationships present. We learn about relationships throughout our childhoods. Often we absorb experience rather than anyone spelling it out for us. There may be aspects of life in our family that we would like to repeat, and others which we hope to avoid repeating. The work can go beyond family and explore culture, different practices, assumptions and expectations. I support my clients to make this work both interesting and useful.
