The first step in the therapeutic process is to create safe physical and emotional space to speak about sources of pain and dysfunction. In one-to-one work, a person who is experiencing pain and a therapist use this space to build insight into the experience and its sources . Both the experience of the relationship between therapist and client, and internal learning are sources of growth and new understanding. With this new knowledge of herself the client is ready to go on to a new stage of her life. My hope is always to enable the client to draw upon her own resources both to reach this stage and to sustain it. I do not suggest that it is a serene path. Sometimes it will seem very difficult, but that is part of the work just as it is part of life.
It is not unusual for people who have always coped to be tipped into depression by a life event, like the loss of a family member, unemployment or illness. Even apparently good events like a promotion can induce paralysing panic or anxiety.
Many of the clients who have come to me in my practice are people who have soldiered on through life. They often have a diagnosis of a depression or anxiety which is now persistently affecting their capacity for enjoyment; accomplishment in work or other spheres; and personal relationships.
Psychodynamic counselling and psychotherapy is a confidential relationship.I work to help the client find the resources that will facilitate a return to what has been described as “the capacity to love and work again.”
