My Approach

My approach is relational, systemic, and grounded in the present moment. I pay close attention to what happens between us in the therapy space, as well as the wider relational patterns that shape your life.

Rather than offering quick fixes, I work collaboratively with you to understand the deeper processes at play — including emotional responses, patterns of connection, and the stories that have been carried over time.

I integrate systemic psychotherapy with Gestalt principles, supporting you to become more aware of yourself, your relationships, and the choices available to you.

Therapy with me is not about being “fixed,” but about creating space for awareness, movement, and meaningful change — at a pace that feels right for you.

About Me

Dr André Swanepoel is a UKCP-registered Systemic, Couple, and Family Psychotherapist with over 20 years of experience working with individuals, couples, and families.

He offers a thoughtful, relational space where clients can explore emotional, relational, and psychological challenges at their own pace. André’s work is grounded in systemic and Gestalt approaches, with a particular sensitivity to how past experiences, family dynamics, and patterns of relating shape present difficulties.

Clients often come to André when they feel stuck, overwhelmed, or caught in repeating patterns — whether in relationships, family life, or within themselves. He is known for his calm, attuned presence and his ability to work with both depth and clarity.

André works with a wide range of issues including anxiety, relational difficulties, trauma, identity, and life transitions.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Many people experience a sense of uncertainty about who they are — feeling disconnected from themselves, questioning their place in the world, or struggling with self-worth and direction. I have a particular interest in working with issues of identity, especially where these are shaped by past relationships, family dynamics, and life experiences. Often, difficulties in the present are connected to ways of being that developed over time in response to earlier environments. In our work together, we take time to explore these experiences with care and curiosity, allowing a deeper understanding of how you relate to yourself and others. This process can support a stronger sense of self, greater clarity, and more grounded ways of engaging in your relationships and life.
Relationship difficulties can take many forms — ongoing conflict, emotional distance, feeling misunderstood, or finding yourself caught in the same patterns again and again. I work with individuals, couples, and families to explore what may be happening beneath the surface of these experiences. Often, present challenges are shaped by earlier relational patterns, attachment experiences, and ways of coping that once made sense but may no longer serve you. Together, we create a space to slow things down and make sense of these patterns — not to assign blame, but to develop a deeper understanding of yourself and your relationships. This can open up new ways of relating, communicating, and responding. Whether you are navigating difficulties with a partner, within your family, or noticing repeated patterns in your relationships more broadly, therapy offers an opportunity for reflection, awareness, and meaningful change.
Separation can be one of the most emotionally challenging experiences in life, often bringing feelings of loss, confusion, and uncertainty about the future. I have a particular interest in working with individuals and couples navigating separation, where patterns of relating, communication, and emotional connection may be under strain or breaking down. These experiences can also raise deeper questions about identity, self-worth, and direction. In our work together, we create space to make sense of what is happening, both in the relationship and within yourself. This process allows for reflection, understanding, and the possibility of moving forward with greater clarity and emotional steadiness.
Some clients come to therapy with questions that go beyond immediate difficulties — a sense of disconnection, a search for meaning, or a feeling that something important is missing or unclear in their lives. I have an interest in working with the spiritual dimension of experience, in a way that is open, grounded, and not tied to any particular belief system. This may include exploring questions of meaning, purpose, identity, and inner experience. For some, this connects with personal beliefs or faith; for others, it may simply be a sense of wanting to feel more connected — to themselves, to others, or to life more broadly. This aspect of the work is always led by you, and held with care, curiosity, and respect for your individual perspective.
Traumatic experiences can have a lasting impact on how we relate to ourselves, others, and the world around us. This may show up as heightened emotional responses, difficulties in relationships, a sense of disconnection, or patterns that feel hard to change. I have a particular interest in working with trauma within a relational and systemic context. Rather than focusing only on past events, we explore how these experiences continue to live in the present — in the body, in emotional responses, and in patterns of relating. Our work together creates a space where these experiences can be approached gradually and safely, with attention to both emotional regulation and meaning-making. This allows for a deeper understanding of your experiences, and supports the possibility of new ways of relating to yourself and others.
